IoT sensor prevents noise pollution caused by festivals

With the music festival season well underway, the decibels are booming across the Netherlands. To prevent noise pollution in residential areas, local authorities are increasingly turning to our state-of-the-art IoT SoundSensor. As soon as permissible sound levels are exceeded, the sensor sends an alert and organizers can be made to turn down the volume right away..

Festival noise is a common annoyance in the Netherlands. Understandably so, as there are many open-air music events across the country. Great for festivalgoers, of course, but often not so great for local residents. Especially festivals involving music with lots of bass have a tendency to really get on people’s nerves after a while.

To prevent festival noise, organizers and local authorities agree on maximum sound levels in advance. SensorTeam’s IoT sensors are subsequently used to monitor decibels produced during the festival, rendering the monitoring data on a sound map that is updated continuously. At present, there are 14 such sensors installed across Amsterdamse Bos, a large park on the edge of the city of Amsterdam, to monitor sound levels during the upcoming festivals that will be staged there.

Next-generation sound sensor

SensorTeam’s IoT SoundSensor is a next-generation sound sensor, one that measures the sound pressure in an area with great accuracy and presents it in real time. Monitoring data is subsequently displayed on a dashboard that can be accessed from any browser on any laptop, tablet, desktop, or smartphone. This makes the system accessible to anyone who is authorized to turn the volume up or down. So, as soon as a local resident complains of noise, action can be taken right away.

IoT sound sensors are everywhere

Our IoT sound sensors can be used anywhere; at festivals and events, but also on construction sites, along busy freeways, at fairs, and in areas with a lot of aircraft noise. Given that the monitoring is constant, the sensors provide instant insight into when and where the noise is the strongest. And action can then be taken immediately.

Smart city solution

More and more cities are using the Internet of Things (IoT). This means that devices are linked to the internet, communicate with each other, and are starting to anticipate our actions (tip: Read our interview with tech specialist Gertjan de Vries about how secure IoT is). Smart cities use this kind of technology to, for example, send drivers notifications on their smartphone on where to find a parking spot or to operate streetlights based on motion detectors. These kinds of solutions make a city efficient and sustainable.

KPN LoRa technology

When it comes to efficiency and sustainability, our IoT sound sensors are the ideal solution. What sets our IoT sensors apart is that they do not need external power supply or an internet connection. They can be installed anywhere. Monitoring data is sent using KPN’s LoRa technology. LoRa stands for ‘long range’ and that is what makes it ideal for data transmission, as it can cover long distances without needing a WiFi or 4G connection. This means that our sound level sensor does not need to be hooked up to existing network infrastructure. It is solar-powered and has a built-in battery that will last ten years.
